The Does…

  • Stack your things in similar sized boxes for easier stacking.
  • Consider shelving to make full use of the space.
  • Stack heavier items on the bottom and don’t over pack boxes so they get too heavy.
  • Leave room for some air flow in the unit by avoiding to stack things directly against the wall
  • Use pallets or something similar to keep items off the floor.
  • Plan out how to organize your unit. Store couches on end, stack chairs seat to seat, and use larger items to store blankets, clothes, and smaller items.
  • Leave a walkway down the center of your unit for easier access to everything.
  • Label your boxes on all sides.
  • Pack things that you will want easy access to towards the front.
  • Take apart large items, such as bed frames, tables, etc. Make sure you keep all parts together. Keep screws and smaller items handy by taping them to the larger item they belong to.
  • When storing appliances make sure you clean them out first. Leave the door slightly open on refrigerators and microwaves to prevent mildew.
  • Rub a small amount of oil on metal tools, bikes, etc. to prevent rust.
  • Store mirrors and paintings on end, don’t lay them flat. Wrap and mark as fragile.
  • Lay blankets over and around furniture to prevent scratching.
  • Consider Insurance for the items you store.
